Bichen can move very fast, but not quite fast enough for him to block an underhanded move like that. In the sliver of a moment before Gideon's pommel makes contact with his hand, Lan Wangji releases Bichen and claps his hands around the blade of her sword to immobilize it between his palms. Bichen, obedient, hovers in the air where he has left it.
